Hey everybody! While I was at the New England Home Show (NEHS), Neil Lamens showed me a new creation of his. It’s a lamp/side table combo piece that I’ll podcast at a later date.

The base of the lamp is a stack lamination which got my creative juices flowing once again. The next morning, at breakfast, I came up with a new table design. I plan on making this table in the Fall, around the time of the next The Sawdust Chronicles Build Challenge.

During a trip to the Society of American Period Furniture Makers in CT, Neil critiqued my table design on camera (with the help of David Pruett). Unfortunately, the microphones weren’t plugged into the camera properly and the 40 minute video was scrapped.

I recently talked with Neil on Skype about the table again, and this episode is that critique. Enjoy.

Turns out he’s been a woodworker for some time, and he’s probably much more proficient than I am.  Due to his many deployments, he is only able to do light woodworking a few times per year.  Still, I wish I had his shop!

Pete and I had the great opportunity to joke… I mean talk with Adam for a while.  This half hour we didn’t get much into the ‘guts’ of what Adam King is all about, that is all coming up in Part 2.  This is us having a great time though.

Jeremy’s Build Challenge story is best told by the man who experienced it, so the link is here.  With all of the twists and turns, all of the blown ‘deadlines’ for this project, I’m very glad to see that Jeremy was able to deliver something to his daughter’s daycare school that they needed.  For that, I congratulate him!

Early on during the first Build Challenge I stated that I wanted all of the judges to build their own project for each Challenge.  When I found that I had many more design requirements in my own project than I would be able to deliver on time, I repealed that statement.  But Neil has recently shown that he still lived up to it in the original Build Challenge, and with the one we just completed.

Here is Neil’s account of his Fall 2009 Build Challenge entry.

Hey Rick………just to keep up the judging requirement on the burner for the future, the Red Baron Fleet is complete.  Half will arrive at a Toys-for-Tots landing strip and the other half will go to Stony Brook University Medical Center and their Kid’s with Cancer Oncology Wing.  George and I attempted to make 14, but one crashed in production, so splitting 13 in half will be different.

I had a good time doing it with George, he’s a very good friend that I don’t see enough, so alot of good peripheral stuff resulted in the end.

I cut the parts, then George did all the drill press, and router and wing assembly, while I machined the fuselage and tail section. It took one 10 hr day together, 4 hrs the next day together, then I finished the assembly and finished them up.  All total, about 24 hours.
